RIAI Scott Tallon Walker student excellence award

Congratulations to ODOS squad member Harry Lloyd for winning the 2021 'Scott Tallon Walker student excellence award'. Presented by the Sheila Carney at this years RIAI Conference. This award fosters architectural excellence among the student body.

'An Architectural response to Direct Provision' was the title of the winning scheme, By our own Harry Lloyd. This project is an exploration of the current situation in Ireland for migrants. It’s also a critique of conditions in the direct provision system. By definition, a migrant is a person who move from one place to another, especially to find work or escape for better living conditions. The Project aims to create suitable living conditions within the heart of medieval Galway.

Market street create's the program’s strong edge. Having the entire ground floor being a moment of circulation will bring Galway into the site, by creating a new link from Shop street, down church lane, through the site and onwards to NUIG. This high volume of footfall becomes a method of integration. On weekends the farmers market is welcomed into the courtyard spaces to allow migrants to bring their own culture to Galway through trade, but also to allow one to regain an Identity left behind.
